  • To fat to run?…for President?

For the last few weeks, the media has not just pressed Chris Christie on his presidential ambitions but also on his weight. Kara Miller of Huffington Post posed the question: should a politician’s girth concern the punditocracy?

Hey, when Hillary Clinton took a run for the oval office pundits didn’t miss a shot about her cleavage, hair do or wrinkles. Why then should waistline comments go to waste? Fat jokes make for great late night material afterall. Remember the coverage of every bite of a Big Mac or fry that President Clinton indulged in?

At first, the answer appeared to be yes. Michael Kinsley penned an op-ed blasting Christie for his weight and suggesting, at the very least, that it would pose problems for him as president saying “Look, I’m sorry, but New Jersey Governor Chris Christie cannot be president: He is just too fat… It is just a too-perfect symbol of our country at the moment, with appetites out of control and discipline near zilch.”
Obesity is a problem, but it’s Christie’s problem. We have had presidents with health challenges before – think of FDR, who hid his paralysis for years and, ultimately, struggled with a weakened (and then failing) heart.

After all, if fitness and slimness foreshadowed good leadership, then Sarah Palin is surely the gal for us. Look at her amazing self-control! The many indicators of her longevity! We certainly wouldn’t have to worry about Palin cutting her presidential tenure short.

Obviously, pant size is a poor measure of presidential character. We all know this from our own lives. Niceness, honesty, competence and intelligence have nothing to do with weight. Of course, for an industry already obsessed with all things visual, it may be an occupational hazard. Sooner or later, though, let’s hope the media figures out what really matters..size does matter but not like you might think! It’s about health…stupid!

The question raises some good points but what really does matter and is it Gov. Christie’s problem or all of ours?

I think that what really matters is our health and longevity and despite passionate arguments to the contrary, Obesity should NOT be a goal! For argument sake let’s put the personal issue of Obesity aside and discuss the governmental issue. IF Gov. Christie were elected to the office of President of the United States, he would have two choices in regard to Obesity.

    1. He could ignore the matter entirely—both his own girth’s affect on his health and longevity as well as it’s affect on the budget.
    2. He could solve the problem; trim his fat and trim BILLIONS of dollars in Obesity related expenses that many leading economists say WILL ultimately cripple our government!
How is the million (ok, BILLION!) dollar question.

I think it is a shame that Gov. Christie decided not to run because if he had and went on to win the race it would have provided an ideal opportunity for a leader to do just that…to lead! The more than 76% majority of Americans could have been inspired by the President shedding the pounds and followed his example. He could have been the poster child for reducing the risk of certain cancers, diabetes, heart disease simply by losing weight. These are the very costly illnesses that the costs to fight them are crippling state governments across the nation and eating up a huge part of the federal budget. He could have made a tax break for every person who maintained a healthy BMI, made food stamps only good for healthy foods, given farmers more benefits for growing fruits and vegetables, incentives for those who take PGX at every meal…join a gym (hey, that’s the best health ensurance I can think of !). Oh well…if only I ran the world! LOL
I don’t think Governor Christie was too fat to run, I think he is like the rest of us who put of “dieting” until too close for the pending event, tried a few fads and then figured why bother. After all, it’s one thing to get teased by a kid at the grocery store for being fat or even by a co-worker but to have every news anchor and talk show host snickering about your penchant for Snickers? That’s a lot of pressure to have to deal with.

Personally I would worry more about a President who’s finger was by the nuclear war button while he was trying to stick with the 500 calorie HCG diet just so Jay Leno didn’t make fun of him! Perhaps bust your vices Governor Christie and take up running. It would do you and your governing body good!
