Off the AP wires today: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) continues to share concerns regarding the safety of experimental diet pills produced by Vivus Inc. This company is one of three drug companies that are preparing for drug’s safety approval. In the case of Vivus Inc., this is their second attempt to gain approval from the FDA.
There have been no new prescription weight loss drug to enter the market in over a decade, and drug companies are racing to have their new weight loss drug hit the market first. Arena Pharmaceuticals Inc., Orexigen Therapeutics Inc. and Vivus have submitted weight loss drugs for FDA approval with no success. All three companies are currently preparing for resubmitting their drug products for approval.
Most recently, Vivus Inc. has announced they are preparing their weight loss drug for a second attempt for FDA approval. In the past, the drug posed safety risks, including heart risk and birth defects, according to the FDA. However, these side effects have not been reported in their follow-up study.
In October 2010, Qnexa, Vivus’s weight loss drug, was rejected by the FDA due to reports of heart problems and birth defects among pregnant women. This drug is composed of two already approved drugs. One component is phentermine, an appetite suppressor, and the other component is topiramate, a drug used to treat seizure/migraine. Side effects of this potential drug include eye problems, reduced sweating, regulated body temperature, acidic body fluids, and fetal toxicity.
The FDA is expected to make its final decision on these weight loss drugs in April.
Some analysts believe that Qnexa is the most promising contender for a new diet pills because it has reported high levels of weight loss. From the company reports, on average subjects are losing more than 10 percent of their total body mass.
Obesity is a serious issue for Americans. About 35 percent of Americas are obese, creating a tremendous need for weight-loss therapies.
Julia’s take: Folks….YES Obesity is a huge problem in the US and something that we MUST not only do to help save individual lives but to also overall help our economy—obesity is what will ultimately bankrupt our nation if we don’t. However, I KNOW that NOT ONE person who is obese or overweight is so because they are lacking of Qnexa! OR whatever other drug that Vivus or other drug companies are feverishly trying to develop and market.
The solution to obesity does not lie in a chemical with side effects that can cause eye problems, fetal toxicity…seriously!? Is anyone OK with putting something like that in their body just to lose weight?!
Especially when the real solution is safe and possible for everyone!
We are overweight because we live in a society where unhealthy foods have become standard. McDonalds would LOVE to see Qnexa approved so that people can continue eating Big Macs and McBites (Pop Smile Repeat!) while taking their “drug” to counteract it. Coca-Cola would be thrilled to have fetal toxicity risked as long as Coke sales don’t slip!
Dare I venture onto the side of extremism but what IF a person were to drink water rather than soft drinks, consume healthful portions of REAL foods such as oatmeal, lean meats/protein, fruits vegetables and get 30 minutes of exercise a day? (and even better adding 2.5-5 grams of PGX to each meal to ensure proper fiber, satiety and blood sugar stabilizing effects) What if THAT scenario became the norm? Would we need Qnexa or would be do just fine on our own?
I don’t know about you, but I would rather do what I KNOW has NO possibility of giving me the side effects commonly associated with the diet drugs available today and in the works for tomorrow. You are an adult, the choice is yours but I urge you to choose wisely, literally your life depends upon it!
While you await the FDA nod to ingest something as potentially dangerous as Qnexa, you can try my 26 week lifestyle change program absolutely totally free, no strings attached at www.PGX.com just sign up and download…never even need to put a credit card in…in this case, FREE really does mean free–and it’s also 100% free of any dangerous side effects! NOT eating fast food can’t kill you…taking a walk won’t cause fetal toxicity, ceasing soft drink consumption won’t raise your heart rate…etc!
But it also won’t give you overnight miracle results! Sadly, you are going to have to do a bit of work on your own and change a few things…but no worries, I am right here to help you along the way for the next 6 months!
